Overview
A Brief History
During the catastrophic event known as the Great Change, triggered when the Neth unleashed their end-of-world weapon, several significant phenomena occurred. Despite widespread destruction, the complete annihilation of life on Earth did not transpire. Instead, something unexpected took place:
- The fabric of space-time was torn apart, creating rifts known as Breaches. These Breaches connect Earth Prime (our Earth) to an infinite number of parallel universes via other Earths.
- A previously unknown realm called the Void, which exists between universes, was discovered and became accessible.
- Threads of exotic matter, leaking through the tears in space-time, emerged as a new and unique resource present on Earth Prime and other worlds.
- The DNA of a small portion of survivors was mysteriously activated or altered, though the exact mechanism remains unknown. This change enabled a small percentage of the population, now called Weavers, to manipulate exotic matter with their thoughts and weave it into reality.
Many believe that Aegis’s defensive shield around the planet—an ionised phase-shifting field—caused the unexpected phenomenon known as the Great Change.
The Art of Weaving
“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”
- Arthur C. Clarke, Profiles of the Future (1961)
While Weaving may resemble the magic described in fantasy literature or entertainment, it is firmly grounded in science. Weaving involves the manipulation of exotic matter that seeps into Earth Prime through the Breaches. However, exotic matter is inherently unstable and powerful, presenting inherent risks even for skilled Weavers. To avoid mental or physical repercussions, Weavers must resist the Pattern’s Power, or risk experiencing Strain or, in severe cases, Wounds. Strain represents the mental exhaustion Weavers endure when attempting to control exotic matter’s chaotic nature. Poorly executed Weaving can result in unforeseen consequences, making it crucial for Weavers to balance their abilities carefully.
